Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario prices rose 3.6 % over the 12 months to September 2026, against 3.7 % for the U.S. city average and 3.4 % for the West region. It is one of 3 metro series here that only begin in 2017: it starts in December 2017, and that month is also its base, December 2017=100. The level therefore reads almost like a percentage. At 142.969 in September 2026, it says Riverside prices are 43.0 % above December 2017. Over the same stretch, Los Angeles rose 38.4 % and the nation 36.7 %. In the latest year, recreation ran furthest above its national rate, at +7.3 % against +2.8 %, and energy was +20.9 %. The fastest Riverside year so far is 2022, at 8.7 %. Riverside is priced in odd months, so the 2025 lapse in appropriations left its series whole. The next index, for November 2026, comes on December 10, 2026.
An index you can read at a glance
Most local indexes are set to 100 over 1982-84, so their level means little on its own. Riverside is different. Because its base is December 2017=100, its first month, the index minus 100 is the price rise since the start: 142.969 today means 43.0 %. For any other pair of dates, divide the later index by the earlier one, or let the calculator do it.
The same base is used by the census division indexes the BLS added with its 2018 area revision. The four regions and most metros keep their older bases, which is why you should compare areas in percent changes, not in index points.

5 of the 9 major Riverside groups rose faster than their national counterparts over the latest 12 months. Transportation was +7.7 %, shelter +2.5 %, food at home +3.7 % and core prices +2.0 %. Every Riverside group starts in December 2017, like the all-items index, so group comparisons only go back that far.
Odd months, untouched by the 2025 gap
The BLS prices Riverside in January, March, May, July, September and November. During the lapse in appropriations no prices were collected anywhere, and every October 2025 index is blank, but October was never a Riverside month. Its November 2025 index was priced and the 2025 annual average uses the usual six months. An even month typed into the calculator falls back on the Riverside index of the month before.
Record years
With full annual averages from 2019, Riverside has a short history. Its peak is 8.7 % in 2022; its lowest rate 1.9 % in 2020. It beat the West region in 6 of 7 years (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025). With so few annual changes, one unusual year weighs heavily in any average you take over the whole series.
