How this is computed

Prepared by Radif Partners · How the figures are built · BLS series CUURS23BSA0, priced in even months

Detroit area prices rose 3.7 % in the 12 months to August 2026, against 3.4 % for the U.S. city average and 3.6 % for the Midwest region over the same months. The index is the CPI-U for Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI, not seasonally adjusted, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in February, April, June, August, October and December. Food and beverages were up +6.5 % and energy +25.2 %, while core prices, which leave out food and energy, rose +1.6 %. Medical care moved -1.5 %. In 2025 Detroit posted 1.7 % on the annual average, computed from 5 months because October 2025 was never published. A sum of $1,000 at the 2019 average needs $1,321 today. The next Detroit index, October 2026, is due November 10, 2026.

Food and energy against Detroit's core

The gap between Detroit's headline and its core tells most of the story. All items rose +3.7 %; strip out food and energy and the rise falls to +1.6 %, below the national core of +2.4 %. So the pressure sits in the two groups that core leaves out.

Food and beverages in Detroit were +6.5 % over 12 months, ahead of the +2.6 % national change. A household that spent $200 on food in August 2025 would need $213 for the same basket at that index. Food at home, the grocery part, shows +2.0 %, so the faster part of the group is everything outside food at home. Energy was +25.2 %, against +20.4 % nationally.

Other groups went the other way. Medical care moved -1.5 % (nation +1.6 %) and recreation -1.0 % (nation +2.7 %). Education and communication was -0.0 %. Local group indexes rest on small samples, and the BLS says they are more volatile than national ones.

The even-month calendar and October 2025

Detroit is priced in even months. That put October 2025 on its schedule, and the BLS published nothing for that month. The shutdown FAQ adds that even-month survey prices were carried forward from August to October inside the computation, and that no two-month change was published for December 2025. Ask the calculator for October 2025 in Detroit and it uses August 2025, with a note. October 2026, released November 10, 2026, will lack a 12-month change for the same reason.

Some groups can update faster than the all-items index: the BLS prices food at home and energy every month in all areas. That is why the energy line in the table below carries September 2026 while all items stop at August 2026.

Detroit inside the Midwest

The Midwest region, published monthly, was at +3.6 % on the same 12 months as Detroit's +3.7 %, so Detroit ran hotter than the region. In 2025 the gap was 1.7 % for Detroit and 2.8 % for the region, with the nation at 2.6 %. See the Midwest page and the Chicago page for the monthly neighbors.

Records in the Detroit series

The series opens in December 1914 on a 1982-84=100 base. Its highest annual rate is 23.1 % in 1917, with 1920 next at 19.8 %. Its sharpest decline is -13.5 % in 1932. Since 2000, annual prices fell in 2009 and 2015.

Questions people ask

What is the inflation rate in Detroit for 2026?

The latest Detroit CPI-U reading is 3.7 % over the 12 months to August 2026, not seasonally adjusted. Detroit is priced in even months, so September 2026 has no all-items figure. The U.S. city average for the same 12 months was 3.4 %, and the Midwest region 3.6 %.

Why are food prices rising faster in Detroit?

The Detroit food and beverages index was +6.5 % over 12 months, against +2.6 % nationally, while food at home was +2.0 %. The rest of the group is everything outside food at home. The BLS does not explain local moves, and a metro group index rests on a small sample, so one release can overstate a trend.

Does the Detroit CPI cover all of Michigan?

No. It covers the BLS area Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI, a single metropolitan area. The rest of Michigan has no metro index of its own. For an amount tied to another part of the state, the Midwest region index or the Size Class B/C index for smaller cities is the closest published measure.

Results apply the published CPI indexes to the amount you type. An index tracks the average prices paid by urban consumers in an area, not your own budget, and it does not compare price levels between cities. A month the BLS did not publish is never filled in: the calculator names the index it uses instead.
