New York area prices rose 4.5 % in the 12 months to September 2026, ahead of the 3.7 % of the U.S. city average and above the 4.2 % of the Northeast region. The series is the CPI-U for New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA, not seasonally adjusted, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it every month, so any month you pick has its own index (October 2025 apart). Core prices, all items less food and energy, were up +3.7 %, against +2.6 % nationally. Transportation rose +11.0 % and shelter +4.5 %. Since the 2019 annual average, $1,000 has needed $1,308 to keep pace with New York prices, compared with $1,318 on the national index. The October 2026 figure comes on November 10, 2026.
Every month counts in New York
Most metro indexes skip half the calendar. New York does not. The BLS FAQ explains why: food at home, energy and a few other items are priced monthly everywhere, and in the three largest publication areas (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago) every other item is priced monthly too. For you, that means a raise dated in March, a lease signed in June or a bill from November each meet an exact New York index, with no substitution by a neighboring month.
The series opens in December 1914, and its reference base is 1982-84=100. The latest level, 363.87, sits above the national 336.94 for the same month. Read that as faster price growth in New York since the early 1980s, nothing more: the BLS says an area index does not show whether living costs are higher in one place than in another.
Where New York ranks right now
On each metro's latest 12-month change, New York comes 3rd of the 23 areas the BLS publishes. Its own region, the Northeast, was at +4.2 %, so the New York area is running hotter than the region it belongs to. The Northeast region page and the Philadelphia page let you compare the two big markets of that region side by side.
Core prices and the cost of getting around
Two groups stand out in the latest New York figures. The first is core inflation: +3.7 % over 12 months, above the national +2.6 %. Core leaves out food and energy, so this comparison is not driven by gasoline. The second is transportation, at +11.0 % against +7.9 % for the country. Had a $4,000 transportation budget from September 2025 followed the New York index, it would be $4,441 today.
Shelter, the heaviest item in any CPI basket, rose +4.5 %, faster than the +3.2 % national pace. Medical care was +0.7 % and food at home +2.1 %. Small groups like these swing from one month to the next, because a local sample is far smaller than the national one.

A century of New York records
The fastest year on record is 1917, at 20.8 %, followed by 1918 at 18.0 %. The steepest fall is 1921, at -10.4 %, and the latest year with falling prices on the annual average is 1955. Since 2000, the peak is 2022 at 6.1 %, lower than the national peak of 8.0 % in 2022. In 2 of the 5 years from 2021 to 2025, New York's annual rate came out above the national one.
October 2025 in a monthly series
A monthly series has no way around a missing month, and the October 1, 2025 to November 12, 2025 lapse in appropriations took one away. New York lost its October 2025 index outright, like the national one. The November 2025 index came out on December 18, 2025 with no one-month change, and the 2025 annual average uses 11 months. The next gap is ahead: the October 2026 index, due November 10, 2026, will have no 12-month change, since there is no October 2025 to compare it with. The October 2025 page covers the rest.
