Messages that help

  • An index that differs from the BLS table for the same area, item and month: give the series code (it starts with CUUR) and the value you see.
  • A month that the calculator treats as unpublished although the BLS shows a value, or the reverse.
  • A new BLS release or an SSA announcement that the site has not caught up with yet.
  • Embedding the calculator on a blog, a forum or a union site: the code is on the embed page.

What we cannot do

We cannot tell you which index your lease, contract or pension plan should use, or check a raise your employer offered. Read the clause of the document itself; for Social Security benefits, the SSA is the only authority. We are not a government office.

Results apply the published CPI indexes to the amount you type. An index tracks the average prices paid by urban consumers in an area, not your own budget, and it does not compare price levels between cities. A month the BLS did not publish is never filled in: the calculator names the index it uses instead.
